The frames are standardized according to standards established by the number of points of stretcher, this corresponding to the dimensions of the canvas. They are divided under the three following names :
- Figure (formats more or less square)
This format is supposed to be obtained by applying the golden number multiplied by 2:
long side = short side * 0.618034 * 2
- Landscape (Rectangular format)
This format is supposed to be obtained by calculating the door of harmony:
long side = short side * 1.414214...
- Navy (clearly elongated rectangular formats, panoramic)
This format is supposed to be obtained by applying the golden number:
long side = short side * 1.618034
In fact, if we applying these calculations to agreed sizes listed below, the result is rather approximate. The rules are old definitions, successive changes in weights and measures probably explain these arithmetic anomalies.
However, language is a convention. A canvas format 6F is still supposed to measure 41x33 cm. Similarly, a 40M frameworks will frame a canvas size 100x65. Moreover, the dimensions of a painting aren't necessarily standardized dimensions. It can be necessary to make a frame to measure.
